Look Inside
Look Inside
DON’T JUST sit there, Raine ordered herself. Move. Say something innocuous. Do something to ease the tension. Just stop staring at his shoulders! Thunder boomed a warning and she jumped, knocked from her trance.
“You’re not supposed to come onto my side,” she informed him.
Brilliant, Featherstone. Considering he wasn’t on her side, she’d just given him the perfect opening to indulge his peculiar brand of humor.
Lucien recognized it, as well. Eyes as black as a moonless night gleamed with a hint of laughter and a half smile tugged at the corner of his broad mouth. She recognized that look.
It was an irresistible mixture of devilish charm and “gee, shucks, ma’am” good ol’ boy appeal. Danger and good-natured fun. That deadly combination had succeeded in coaxing at least half the women in the county into his bed.
“Want to try again?” he offered. “Maybe hit me with a comment along the lines of, ‘Don’t look at me like that, you dirty rotten scoundrel’?”
“Sounds good to me, considering that’s precisely what you are.” She returned to sliding her fingers through her hair, concentrating on making the motion as smooth and relaxed as possible. “You’re not supposed to invade my side.”
“In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m still on my side of the rope.”
Technically, he was right. Still... Naked shoulders rippling with lean muscle qualified as an invasion in her book, especially when they’d leaked over the top of the blanket and were busy infiltrating her every thought and desire.
“Crossing the line includes using your height to unfair advantage,” Raine informed him.
“I’m just worried about you getting warm and dry.”
“That’s none of your concern. You just worry about staying put.”
His smile faded, along with every scrap of charm and fun. Only the danger remained. “I don’t give a damn whose side is whose. Right now I’m more concerned about you turning into a human Popsicle.” He jerked his head in the general direction of the stove. “Now haul your backside over here and quit acting like some outraged virgin from the turn of the century.”
He knew how to hit where it hurt. Unfolding herself from the mattress she stalked toward the wool barrier separating them. “Since you relieved me of my virginity all those years back, I can’t very well play the part, can I? But at least allow me a bit of outrage. You owe me that much.”
“Outrage?” A rumbling quality crept into his deep tones, like the warning growl of a mountain lion. “Over what? You wanted me in your bed and I was only too happy to accommodate you.”
Pain ripped through her. “Right. Out of the goodness of your heart.” She wouldn’t show how deeply he’d wounded her. Pride came to her rescue and she lifted her chin to a combative angle. “You’re so kind, Kincaid. A regular prince among men. Too bad you were such a loose-lipped prince.”
Lucien knocked the blanket aside. “Explain that crack.”
The growl had turned to a full-throated roar and Raine couldn’t help falling back a step. Even in a temper he was magnificent. He’d always been magnificent. It wasn’t his size alone, although she found that impressive enough. It was also the formidable power of his personality and his sheer untamed maleness. She’d never encountered another man to match.
